Functionalized self-assembled monolayers on mesoporous silica nanoparticles with high surface coverage

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) containing vinyl-, propyl-, isobutyl- and phenyl functionalized monolayers were reported. These functionalized MSNs were prepared via molecular self-assembly of organosilanes on the mesoporous supports. The relative surface coverage of the organic monolayers can reach up to 100% (about 5.06 silanes/nm.

Functionalized monolayers on mesoporous silica and on titania nanoparticles for mercuric sensing.

Heterogeneous "naked-eye" colorimetric and spectrophotometric cation sensors were prepared by immobilization of an azobenzene-coupled receptor onto mesoporous silica (AR-SiO(2)) or titania nanoparticles (AR-TiO(2)) via sol-gel or hydrolysis reactions. The optical sensing ability of AR-SiO(2) was studied by addition of metal ions such as K(+), Ca(2+), Sr(2+), Co(2+), Cd(2+), Pb(2+), Zn(2+), Fe(3...

High quality factor silica microspheres functionalized with self-assembled nanomaterials.

With extremely low material absorption and exceptional surface smoothness, silica-based optical resonators can achieve extremely high cavity quality (Q) factors. However, the intrinsic material limitations of silica (e.g., lack of second order nonlinearity) may limit the potential applications of silica-based high Q resonators. Here we report some results in utilizing layer-by-layer self-assemb...

Super-Hydrophobic/Icephobic Coatings Based on Silica Nanoparticles Modified by Self-Assembled Monolayers

A super-hydrophobic surface has been obtained from nanocomposite materials based on silica nanoparticles and self-assembled monolayers of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS) using spin coating and chemical vapor deposition methods. Scanning electron microscope images reveal the porous structure of the silica nanoparticles, which can trap small-scale air pockets. An average water co...
